Google recently enacted a number of changes to its Product Search data feed specifications and requirements.  To ensure visibility and success this holiday season, here are three key areas which merchants should pay particular attention to with their feeds:

  • Include Unique Product Identifier Info.  Feeds must contain accurate UPC codes and/or MPN numbers and brand designations for each item included.  Feeds found to be lacking in this information are at risk for being suspended from Google Product Search.
  • Update feeds frequently to maintain data freshness.  Google is monitoring product availability and pricing much more closely and will remove products whose information doesn’t match what’s found on the merchant’s website.
  • Product Variations:  merchants selling apparel and accessories must include Product Variant attributes for color, size, gender, age group, pattern, and material.  Additionally, a separate record must be provided for each unique combination of product variations, and the product image provided must reflect that combination as well.
